Apple TV+’s mind-bending science fiction series Constellation left a lot of unanswered questions in its season 1 finale, but will the show return for season 2? Created by Peter Harness from an idea by Sean Jablonski, Constellation concerns an astronaut named Jo who, following an accident in space, returns to Earth to find that aspects of her life are changed or missing. Incorporating heady sci-fi elements like parallel universes and quantum mechanics into its gripping personal drama, the series continues Apple TV+’s successful foray into the genre.
Greeted with decent praise when the show debuted, Constellation maintained a respectable 71% Rotten Tomatoes score across its 8-episode first season. Though it had all the hallmarks of a limited series, the ending of Constellation season 1 made it abundantly clear that things had only just begun for the lone survivor of the ISS disaster, and Jo’s story was far from over. As previous series like Lost has proven, the complicated mechanics of Constellation‘s plot could allow for the Apple original series to blossom into an ongoing streaming hit. However, it will need to get renewed for season 2 first.

With the first season ending in late March 2024, it isn’t astonishing that Apple TV+ hasn’t renewed Constellation for season 2 quite yet. Streaming TV operates differently than network shows, and long-term data is often the deciding factor for a series’ renewal, as opposed to live ratings numbers. However, a show like Constellation has a lot of gas left in the tank, and there are a million directions the mind-bending series could go in, should it get the green light.
While nothing is officially confirmed, series creator Peter Harness has discussed the future of Constellation and has made it abundantly clear that he isn’t out of ideas yet. “I would love to do a series 2” Harness explained, “Were we to have many seasons of it, I’ve got a lot of it in my head, and I know what the last kind of beat of it will probably be.” With that in mind, Constellation has the opportunity to build and develop to a natural conclusion, if Apple TV+ wants to bring it back.
The multiversal nature of Constellation means that any character could return at any moment, and they likely will if the show is green-lit for season 2. However, there are a few characters who will certainly be on hand to lead the show, namely Noomi Rapace’s beleaguered astronaut “Jo” Ericsson, as it has been her story from the very beginning. Jonathan Banks will also likely return in his dual role as Henry and Bud Caldera, and Irena’s sudden change of heart at the end of season 1 means Barbara Sukowa will need to return to continue her story.

Nothing is confirmed about the story of Constellation season 2, but the cliffhanger ending of season 1 left a lot of questions to be answered. Just as Jo seemingly accepted her place in the alternate world she now lives in, things took a shocking turn when the formerly deceased version of Jo suddenly appeared on the ISS and intended to make contact. Season 2 will need to address how the appearance of “liminal” Jo will disrupt the living Jo’s life, and it opens the door for other such “liminal” people to arrive as well.
Irena had seemingly succeeded at convincing Jo to accept her life, but she quickly took a 180 when she discovered Jo’s unborn baby was a “liminal” person as well. This sparked her to reach out to other former cosmonauts to discover if they suffered from the same problems. Though exact plot threads are still elusive, Constellation season 2’s story is just as intriguing because of its near-limitless possibilities.
