American Idol contestant Madaí ChaKell took to social media to react to the supposedly “bad attitude” she displayed in Hollywood Week. This stressful round always creates a lot of drama. Typically, that comes in the form of the contestants arguing with each other because someone’s not practicing enough or their personalities are not meshing well. However, American Idol season 22 got rid of the group round, but there was still plenty of tension. Madaí criticized American Idol season 22 judge Luke Bryan after having a very awkward onstage moment when she had to restart her performance.
Madaí spoke with Perez Hilton on Instagram this week to rehash all the drama that went down during American Idol season 22’s Hollywood Week, admitting that she wants to expose the “truth” about what happened.
The singer claimed that critics on social media called her out for having a “bad attitude“ because they don’t know her. According to her, “Luke Bryan and the rest of the judges knew exactly what I meant when I said, ‘Is your voice okay?’” Madaí is referring to the moment when she rhetorically asked if Luke’s voice was okay, which seemed to be her way of mocking his comments about her voice.
Madaí criticized fans who gave her a hard time by adding, “If you were asked to sing right now, how would you sound? Because you know all the work that we’re doing behind the scenes aside [from] what you guys put on TV.” The singer, who was eliminated during Hollywood Week, justified her behavior, saying there was nothing wrong with the way she acted, and it was “warranted” due to the fact that she’s been in the music business for a while. She seemed frustrated by the criticism directed towards her when the focus should be on the contestants still competing.
Luke wasn’t afraid to speak his mind about Madaí’s awkward Hollywood Week performance. First, she had the piano player start over, then she decided to get rid of him all together and sing a cappella. After all of that, the producers gave her a do-over to perform again after there was a disconnect between her performance and what she had rehearsed with the band. Even without any instrumental music behind her, her voice still didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the judges.
It’s completely understandable why Madaí is frustrated. After all, American Idol is a huge opportunity to showcase her talent. There’s no reason to doubt her explanation about the piano player not performing the same way during rehearsals. However, once she was given a second chance, her voice still wasn’t ready for the American Idol season 22 Top 24. Even if her voice was exquisite, there’s no guarantee the voting public would have accepted her “bad attitude.” After all, it’s the viewers who decide the winner, and the backlash to her behavior likely would have carried over into Hawaii and the live shows if she had advanced.
