Station 19 season 7, episode 4 introduced a wide variety of threats and stressors for everyone in the firehouse, endangering the bond among the firefighters of Station 19 and beyond. Focusing on one particularly heavy 24-hour shift, the episode managed to pack just as many immediate threats in the field for the team as more general, career ones due to the budget cuts ordered by Mayor Osman. Station 19 season 7, episode 4’s focus on the problems afflicting the team together and alone thus introduced a giant threat to what is considered Station 19’s superpower, their unity as a crew.
Station 19 season 7 already introduced big challenges like Andy’s struggles adjusting to her new role and Chief Ross’s reduced agency due to Osman’s threats, but “Trouble Man” showed their full extent in how they risked endangering many more than just Andy and Natasha. Station 19 season 7, episode 4 also better established various personal problems affecting team members inside and outside the firehouse, including Vic’s change in behavior for the worst, Theo’s lack of belonging within the team, and Maya’s parenting struggles. This way, the episode set up all the storylines needing to wrap up by the show’s end.
Warren’s return to his regular duties was marred by shared preoccupation that he wasn’t up to the task during calls due to his back pain, but Station 19 season 7, episode 4 didn’t offer more details about what caused it. Ben’s refusal to accept what seemed like an injury was evident from his wish not to do less than other team members, but with the budget cuts coming for the entirety of the department, his hesitancy to tell the whole truth could understandably be linked to wanting to keep his job.
While Ruiz’s surprise resignation by the episode’s end might have stopped Andy from having to choose who to let go, Ben’s evident problem can easily become a danger for the entirety of Station 19 were he unable to do his job properly during a perilous call. The insistence with which Station 19 season 7, episode 4 highlighted Ben’s back pain thus hints he might have to leave his work family indefinitely if his symptoms persist, making his departure in Station 19’s final season entirely unrelated to the budget cuts plaguing Andy and Chief Ross.
Vic’s loss of hope was already hinted at by her reaction after the chemical company Crisis One call in the Station 19 season 7 premiere, which undercut her contribution despite everyone coming out of it alive. Still, Station 19 season 7, episode 4 made things worse, as not only she seemed to have lost joy in anything team-related, but she also removed her tracker, resulting in falling asleep and missing an emergency. Her refusal to engage with anyone trying to connect with her, including Travis who had always been her closest friend, showed how her wellbeing might still worsen.
Station 19 season 7, episode 4 perfectly emphasized how those closest to Vic had yet to realize how strenuous her situation is, with Ben and Travis noticing something was off, but only marginally. Theo’s interest in wanting to reconnect because of his feelings for her slightly blinded him regarding her odd behavior and similarly, Andy’s preoccupation with the budget cuts shut Vic out without even listening to her requests or noticing how unlike herself Vic was behaving. Hopefully, the Station 19 team can start supporting her before a terrible accident is caused by her self-imposed distance.
The close relationship among all Station 19 firefighters was praised multiple times in Station 19 season 7, episode 4, but Andy feeling so strongly about standing by them caused her a problem with the difficult decisions to take because of looming budget cuts. Jack’s injury making him retire almost caused Andy to show what others would have called weakness if they saw her waver. However, Chief Ross’s implementation of Osman’s orders left Andy in a frenzy during an already impossible day, having to find a way not to lose another team member.
While the difficult calls didn’t result in anybody from Station 19 dying or being wounded almost fatally, they still shaped the hopeless sentiment felt throughout the firehouse, because of Andy’s audit orders and her unwillingness to hear them out, so preoccupied as she was with having to find a solution. Andy will soon need to sort out what Ross called “one foot in the locker room and one foot in the captain’s office,” or she won’t be able to help or lead her firefighters the way they need her to, even if they were to view her as intransigent sometimes.
The horrifying streetcar accident left the team shattered in Station 19 season 7, episode 4, but it also prompted a connection between two characters with a similar history that could as a result help each other so much. Beckett’s first day back in the field proved as challenging as it could have possibly been, both because of the disunity among the team and the horrific nature of the incidents they attended. However, the genuine connection formed with Sullivan gave them both a chance to have someone who understood the other fully because of their shared experiences.
Beckett’s hopelessness was after all something Sully had already felt in Station 19 season 3, and he could offer him insights Beckett couldn’t have had due to his only recent sobriety. Sully and Beckett’s unlikely connection marks a new path for both, helping them feel less alone in the firehouse, not because of the Station 19 firefighters not including them, but because they could have not understood how such a day could affect them in a harder, different way from the others.
Although Vic publicly sharing what happened in the aftermath of her and Theo’s breakup risked endangering Theo and Travis’s Station 19 friendship, that knowledge eventually pushed them closer in the mayhem of the impossible shift. Travis and Theo’s friendship had already gone through highs and lows after Travis’s late husband died on a call under Theo’s leadership and because of Theo’s mistake, but Theo and Vic’s relationship slowly led Travis to forgive Theo and eventually welcome him back as a friend, with the three being so close they could have been considered a trio by Station 19 season 6.
Travis admitting he couldn’t judge Theo’s actions because he cheated on Eli showed how far their bond had come and even proved one of the few silver linings of the horrible shift at the center of Station 19 season 7, episode 4. Despite missing Vic, who initially championed their reconnection, Travis and Theo’s friendship was so strong that they could be honest with each other and sure the other wouldn’t judge them, leading to a simultaneously funny and candid exchange that served as an example of the amazing progress the two made through the years.
Station 19 season 7, episode 4 finally saw Chief Ross implement Osman’s orders and deliver the news of ten percent cuts to the annual budget of each firehouse. However, hiding the reasons that led Natasha to issue that order made Andy and Sully rightfully wary, not only because it went against Osman’s promises to Travis, whose forfeit got him elected in Station 19 season 6’s ending, but also because of Natasha’s cagey attitude and defensiveness.
With less personnel available on calls potentially endangering all the firefighters in the department, Chief Ross’s choice to carry out Osman’s orders without trying to find other solutions seems more and more like a way to keep her job. Andy and Sully asking Natasha about the reasons behind it even gave her a chance to reveal Osman’s manipulation, but Chief Ross’s difficult position couldn’t let her consider them allies like in the past. Were she to continue, Natasha’s tendency to face challenges alone could risk alienating the few who always supported her, making it impossible for true change to happen.
Maya was finally able to settle in her and Carina’s new house with Liam but her approach to parenthood caused more than an issue in Station 19 season 7, episode 4. If Mason’s brief reappearance in Station 19 season 7 only hinted at Maya’s happy ending involving family rather than her career previously, Station 19 season 7, episode 4 confirmed how much meeting him again impacted Maya, indirectly making her more worried than before about how to protect Liam and raise him in the best possible way with Carina.
Mason’s disappearance after Station 19 season 1 and his new affiliations make it more difficult for him and Maya to reconcile, but were she to try, she would at least have the closure she never had with her parents, especially after she had her mother’s support only for her to return to her father. However, given how much Maya’s family’s past affected her parenting choices, trying to check in with him might benefit her, even just to be able to close that chapter and raise her family with Carina at peace, without mulling over her history.
Andy’s inability to put distance between her new role and the one she inhabited within her team before was evident throughout Station 19 season 7, making her problems with boundaries a prominent issue with which she will have to deal. However, the diner fire call also highlighted Andy’s ability to protect her team and lead successfully a call where the odds were stacked against Station 19.
Between Ben lying about his back and the jaws of life being stolen, Andy had her hands full and even stopped in the middle of the action, seemingly overwhelmed. Still, Andy made all the right choices and did so quickly in Station 19 season 7, episode 4’s diner fire, proving she knew how to reprimand her team and how to delegate to other stations, bringing all of Station 19 firefighters back to the firehouse safe. While Andy will inevitably need to work to set up boundaries with the team, she proved her worth as captain multiple times already.
Theo tried for the entirety of Station 19 season 7, episode 4 to build meaningful connections with the crew after his breakup with Vic and returning to his lieutenant position left him feeling like he needed to find his way back to being part of the team. From judging Kate for going private to offering support to Ben and Sean without them opening up to him, Theo evidently tried to find a way to belong, without being particularly successful.
