Invincible creator Robert Kirkman breaks his silence on the sudden recasting of Ezra Miller in season 2. In season 1 of the animated superhero adaptation, Miller voiced the role of D. A. Sinclair, a mad scientist who kidnapped and mutilated humans to turn them into ReAnimen. The character only appeared in three episodes, but the show hinted to viewers that Sinclair would return in season 2. Although Sinclair did return briefly in Invincible season 2, part 2, some perceptive viewers may have noticed the character was no longer voiced by Miller.
In an interview with Variety, Kirkman addressed the quiet recasting of Miller in Invincible season 2. Kirkman pointed out that Miller wasn’t the only recast — the voice of Rick Sheridan was also changed with Luke Macfarlane replacing Jonathan Groff in season 2. In both cases, the Invincible creator explained it was merely a matter of shifting availability, making recasting necessary. He warned viewers that more recasting could occur in the future, while also praising the work of Miller’s replacement, Eric Bauza. Check out his statement below:
So far, Sinclair has had a relatively minor role in Invincible. In season 1, he began abducting students, including Rick, from Upstate University. Sinclair believes that humans are inferior and that he needs to fix their weaknesses, hence, he turns them into cyborgs, whom he calls ReAnimen, though the process is torturous for its victims. As his experiments continue, he finds himself removing more and more of his victims and their identities through his process. Fortunately, his plans are thwarted by Invincible (Steven Yeun) after he kidnaps Rick.
Still, Invincible viewers and comic readers knew this wasn’t the end of Sinclair, as Cecil (Walton Goggins) takes an interest in the ReAnimen. Even before season 2 premiered, viewers became curious about his future on the show, as Miller had been involved in a number of legal issues since appearing in season 1. Finally, in Invincible season 2, episode 7, “I’m Not Going Anywhere,” Sinclair makes his reappearance, voiced by Bauza. In his cameo, it is confirmed he is perfecting his ReAnimen humanely under Cecil, but he reveals they are not ready to take on Anissa (Shantel VanSanten).
Sinclair’s continued appearance in the show is highly likely. Although controversial, the villain gets much leniency after his crimes simply because Cecil can’t resist an advantage. However, some comic readers may argue he receives some redemption points for using his ReAnimen for good. While the show hints at the ReAnimen being used against the Viltrumites, Sinclair’s creation also plays a vital role in a comic battle against one surprising Guardians of the Globe traitor. With recastings making it possible for most Invincible characters to return for season 3, Sinclair should return for further seasons, though it’s unclear if Bauza will.
