Since 1966, the Dark Knight has dominated the superhero movie genre across multiple live-action Batman interpretations, from Adam West’s lighthearted performance to Robert Pattinson’s gritty take on the Caped Crusader. Meanwhile, other mediums such as video games and animation have approached Batman from a unique perspective. Batman: The Animated Series, in particular, stands as a heartfelt ode to the Dark Knight.
Artist and DC fan Marcelo Millicay pays homage to Batman: The Animated Series by recreating The Batman‘s main cast in the style of Bruce Timm’s 1992 show. Almost three full decades after its 1995 finale, Batman: The Animated Series withstands the test of time as a universally beloved Batman adaptation, and with good reason. Batman: The Animated Series maintains an incredible care for the source material throughout its two seasons, with ever-evolving characters and top-tier audiovisual qualities. For instance, the heroes are allowed to be vulnerable, the villains often have authentic redeeming qualities, and Gotham City is depicted as a truly gloomy and lived-in city.
Batman: The Animated Series never hesitates to explore mature themes in a serious manner. Crime, grief, and morality are central to the show, and each episode takes its time to display their dramatic nuance without taking away from action and the comedy. The original score also accentuates the plot with original arrangements for each episode, and the animated equivalent of the show’s cinematography never stops innovating. The seemingly offhand gags in dialog are often clever double entendres, or they’re clever nods to the characters’ past interactions.
Batman: The Animated Series‘ voice cast is a highlight of the show. The animated series cemented Kevin Conroy as a fan-favorite Batman and Mark Hamill as a beloved Joker. Batman: The Animated Series‘ Harley Quinn was such an inspired original creation, and Arleen Sorkin voiced her so brilliantly, that she made the jump to the comics after debuting in the series. Rarely has an animated show become the source material for the comics, let alone for one of the most popular anti-heroes in a live-action franchise. Such is the impact of Batman: The Animated Series in the Dark Knight’s mythos.
