Kogi rainstorm renders 1,000 homeless

NO fewer than 1,000 people have been rendered homeless, following a rainstorm in Iyara community, headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The Punch gathered that the incident occurred on Monday night.

Speaking shortly after the disaster, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, Oba Jacob Meduten, called on the government, well-to-do individuals and corporate bodies to assist the victims to ameliorate their sufferings.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has appealed to the people to take precautions as the rainy season is fast approaching.

The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency, Mouktar Atimah, while confirming the incident in Iyara, said, โ€œWe got the information that a natural disaster happened in Iyara and immediately, the office deployed men for an on-the-spot assessment. The Local Government Chairman also called us and we are partnering to see how to reduce the suffering of the affected victims.

โ€œEverybody living on the low ground should move to higher ground. Kogites should be very careful the way they roof their houses because if the houses are not roofed properly, the breeze can easily access the building.

He said, โ€œGovernor Ahmed Usman Ododo has set machinery in motion to send relief materials to the affected community, to alleviate their sufferings.โ€
