Suits L.A.’s setting suggests the spinoff show will continue Suits’ funniest running gag about referencing celebrities. As a result of Suits’ impressive success on streaming, a Suits spinoff set in Lost Angeles is happening. Several casting choices and character descriptions for Suits have been revealed already, including Stephen Amell as Ted Black. Amell’s Suits character will be the co-founder of Black Lane Law alongside Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt), a firm that specializes in criminal and entertainment law.
Suits was set in New York, with most of the show being told from the perspective of the attorneys at Pearson. The Suits characters were regularly dealing with important clients from big players in the corporate world. While most of these clients and companies were fictional, the series did include quite a few references to real-life figures, a tradition that Suits L.A. can continue.
Suits would often reference real celebrities and companies, which added to the immersion and helped sell that those characters were high-profile lawyers working with some of the most important businesspeople in the country. One of the best examples of it is the fact one of Harvey Specter’s clients was Michael Jordan, a running gag that was brought up in almost every season of Suits. The show even included cameos from Michael Phelps and Charles Barkley, both of whom played fictional versions of themselves.
Suits L.A. can continue this trend on an even bigger scale. Considering that Ted Black and Stuart Lane’s company is focused on entertainment law, Suits L.A. will most likely reference real celebrities all the time, particularly actors. An entertainment law will work directly with studios and talent, meaning Suits L.A.’s characters will be regularly dealing with the inner workings of the entertainment industry. Even if most of the actors and studios in question turn out to be fictional, there will still be room for fun cameos and namedrops like Suits used to do.
Whereas Suits was all about corporate law, Suits L.A. can be a meta-commentary on the entertainment industry itself. The spinoff series can have plenty of meta jokes about how the movie and television business works, from small references regarding things only those familiar with the industry will recognize to commentary on major, recent topics. Suits L.A. can also discuss some of the flaws within the industry, especially because the story will be told from the perspective of the attorneys.
Naturally, Suits L.A. should not be expected to be just a commentary on the entertainment industry, just like Suits was much more than just showcasing the world of corporate law. Suits was about its characters and the relationships between them, which is why the show’s legal inconsistencies and inaccuracies were not really important. Suits L.A. has to nail its characters first and foremost, regardless of how accurate or meta its approach to entertainment law turns out to be. Still, this new setting makes Suits L.A. very exciting and sets it apart from Suits.
