Four new cast members are set to join Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg in You season 5. Intended to serve as the final chapter of the hit Netflix thriller, season 5 will see Joe return to New York City, a location that has not been used since 2018’s season 1. With the You season 4 finale seeing Joe’s name cleared thanks to the PR efforts of his latest love interest, Kate Galvin-Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), Badgley’s homicidal antihero was not only able to return to his former home, but even publicly reclaim the identity he has kept hidden for so long.
Per a new report from Deadline, You season 5 will introduce a slate of new recurring characters played by Natasha Behnam (The Girls on the Bus), Pete Ploszek (Parks & Recreation), Tom Francis (Sunset Boulevard) and b (Station 19). These latest cast additions come on the heels of previous cast announcements that include Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) and Griffin Matthews (She-Hulk: Attorney At Law).
While a previous teaser for You season 5 hinted at the return of several familiar faces from previous seasons, these latest casting announcements also reveal that Joe will be joined by a whole new group of friends and/or potential victims. Behnam is reported to be playing a character known as Dominique, who is described as an aloof hipster from a wealthy background who is, in fact, a fiercely loyal friend to her assorted artist friends. Though her connection to Joe is unclear, she would likely be acquainted with Brewer’s previously announced, free-spirited playwright Bronte.
The other freshly announced characters include Joe’s new brother-in-law Harrison (Ploszek), a former professional football player and husband to Kate’s sister Reagan Lockwood (Camp), and b’s mysterious Phoenix, whose young life was upended by tragedy. Described as shrewd and resourceful, Phoenix possesses a strong moral code that will likely set them on a collision course with Joe’s darker nature. Meanwhile, Francis is playing a vindictive, wannabe author named Clayton whose controlling nature also draws Joe’s attention.
With such a rich influx of new faces, it will be interesting to see how new showrunners Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo and their team manage to weave You’s latest characters in with the various “loose-ends” that have previously been spoken of. With so many potential enemies looking to exact their own revenge, Joe’s return to New York City will likely be far from peaceful. Nonetheless, Joe has repeatedly shown himself more than capable of extricating himself from difficult situations before, and only time will tell if he can do it one last time.
