Netflix is finally heading back to Wisconsin as it reveals the That ’90s Show season 2 premiere date. The sequel to That ’70s Show proved to be a hit for the streamer upon its early 2023 premiere, garnering strong reviews from critics and audiences and landing in the Top 5 in its debut weekend. Again created by Bonnie & Terry Turner alongside Lindsey Turner and Gregg Mettler, the show centers on Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric and Donna, as she spends the summer with her grandparents, Red and Kitty, and bonds with local teens, including Jay Kelso, whom she builds a romantic relationship with.
As part of the streamer’s Netflix Is A Joke Fest, Netflix has finally unveiled That ’90s Show‘s season 2 premiere date. With a 16-episode count in comparison to season 1, the show will be split into two parts, with Part 2 premiering on June 27 followed by Part 3 on October 24. The streamer has also released the first synopsis for the next season of the show, which reads as follows:
The announcement of a two-part split release for That ’90s Show season 2 may not come as much of a surprise to those familiar with Netflix’s recent slate of releases, as Stranger Things season 4, The Witcher season 3 and You season 4 all saw similar splits. This trend is even set to continue with the upcoming premiere of Cobra Kai season 6, which will not only close out the Karate Kid sequel show by splitting it up, but will do so with three parts, the first two of which will air in five-episode parts in 2024, followed by “The Finale Event” in 2025.
But while this may seem like a general adherence to the streamer’s release model, That ’90s Show season 2 releasing in two parts could be beneficial for the show’s future. One of the biggest concerns from audiences following the first season’s premiere was whether the actors would age out of the roles heading into future seasons, an issue that quickly became prevalent for the Stranger Things cast as the gap between seasons became bigger. Furthermore, the show’s new release date better lines up with the story’s summer setting.
Another major benefit of splitting That ’90s Show season 2 across two parts is a quicker turnaround for development on season 3 should the first part prove successful for Netflix. The streamer does generally tend to wait until after the second part of a show has aired to announce further seasons, but given the likes of The Witcher and One Piece have seen renewals either prior to their premieres or quickly after their premieres, the comedy’s Part 2 premiere seeing major viewership could lead to ensuring the timeline stays secure for That ’90s Show‘s future.
That ’90s Show season 2 begins streaming on Netflix on June 27, with a second part releasing October 24.
