Warning! This post contains a PREVIEW for Mace Windu #4
Mace Windu’s iconic purple lightsaber meets its match in a new Star Wars preview. Taking place before The Phantom Menace and the beginning of the Skywalker saga, Mace Windu’s canonical new comic series sees Samuel L. Jackson’s popular Star Wars character as a Jedi Knight, embarking on an incredibly important mission for the Jedi Council. Seeking to keep a powerful new hyperspace fuel formula out of the wrong hands, Windu finds himself in danger from several threats.
Having just warded off an entire hit squad sent by Jabba the Hutt, Mace Windu now finds himself protecting the pirate Azita Cruuz and the coaxium ultra formula from brand-new assassins belonging to a faction known as The Shroud. As seen in the new preview for Mace Windu #4 by Marc Bernardin and Georges Jeanty, Mace Windu gets more than he bargained for while facing these new attackers:
Having blocked Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber with a metal staff that also looks to produce some kind of green energy, the Jedi Knight is justifiably surprised by this new weapon that seems to have just been introduced in this new Star Wars preview.
There are a few types of lightsaber-resistant metals in the Star Wars galaxy. The most prominent metals are beskar, which is largely used by Mandalorians, and cortosis which is capable of temporarily shorting out a lightsaber and rendering it unusable. Seeing as how these new assassins don’t seem to be connected to Mandalorians and Mace’s lightsaber doesn’t shut off after clashing with this new staff, it does look as though Mace Windu #4 is introducing a new sort of metal that can withstand a lightsaber blade.
A brand-new metal does explain why Mace is so surprised in this new issue. To that end, one of the assassins does hint that “nature provides” suggesting that the weapon comes from some more organic means rather than being some sort of artificial alloy forged by science. After all, that would likely clash with this new group known as The Shroud who seek to rid the galaxy of all technology and reset everything back to darkness, hence their desire to claim and destroy the hyperspace fuel in Azita’s possession.
Naturally, Mace Windu’s mission continues to get even harder now that he’s facing assassins who can effectively block his lightsaber. As such, it certainly looks as though he’s not going to be getting a break anytime soon as he and Azita are continually attacked by one foe after the other. It certainly proves just how valuable this new coaxium ultra fuel truly is with its ability to change the entire face of hyperspace travel in the Star Wars galaxy.
Star Wars: Mace Windu #4 is available May 15th from Marvel Comics.
