Although PlayStation Plus is known for its library of games that are available for free to subscribers, the selection also includes a good helping of interesting DLC. In terms of rotating monthly titles, the most common inclusions tend to be Destiny 2 expansions, but the expanded options available to Extra and Premium members feature a greater amount of variety. One that’s getting added this month is especially exciting, as it’s a pretty crucial add-on to the popular social simulation game The Sims 4.
As announced on the official PlayStation Blog, the PS Plus game catalog for May includes The Sims 4: City Living, an expansion pack that focuses on urban environments and apartment living. Among the vast library of Sims 4 DLC available, City Living stands out with one with some particularly essential additions. It’s joined by other titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Deceive Inc., and Crime Boss Rockay City in the May 2024 PS Plus lineup.
There’s no need to worry about owning a copy of The Sims 4 to access City Living, as the game ended up going free-to-play in 2022. The base content, however, can be somewhat anemic when it comes to city options, though it does have a wide selection of nature-based secret worlds. With the unique exception of the abandoned Sims spinoff franchise The Urbz, The Sims games have always focused on suburban content first and foremost, with most other angles getting fleshed out in expansions.
The Sims 4: City Living adds the world of San Myshuno, an urban environment with plenty of high-rises, festivals, and nightlife to explore. 21 apartments are available for rent, which can make for a very different Sims 4 experience than the homeowner lifestyle. There’s obviously less to do in terms of actual construction, but new items make it possible to deck out the interiors of apartments in fine fashion. Other perks include several new careers and one new entry apiece for skills, traits, and aspirations.
What’s nice about The Sims 4 expansions of this nature is that newcomers can jump into them for a first playthrough, which makes for a more exciting PS Plus addition than an expansion that can only be played after a game’s campaign. The addition of City Living could also bode well for an expanded library of The Sims 4 DLC on PS Plus, which could prove a much less costly way to experience the game’s add-ons.
At any rate, it’s all representative of the big leap forward in playing The Sims on consoles, as the series once developed separate console games that lacked a lot of the features found on PC. Shelling out to live in the apartment life in The Sims 4 might not be for everyone, but when it’s free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, there’s definitely a lot of appeal.
