Group Demands Justice Over killing Of Nigerian In South Africa

The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) is demanding a full investigation into the death of Prince Ebuka, a 43-year-old Nigerian national from Anambra State.

Ebuka was killed on Friday in Danielskuil, Northern Cape, according to a statement released by NUSA. The union highlighted a troubling pattern of police abuse targeting Nigerians in the region, citing similar incidents involving drug accusations and violence in Kimberley since March.

NUSAโ€™s statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Habib Miller, details the account of Ebukaโ€™s wife, Joyce. Law enforcement officers allegedly stormed their home and forced Joyce to leave with their child.

โ€œReports from Ebukaโ€™s wife, Joyce, paint a harrowing picture of law enforcement officers storming their residence, compelling her to evacuate to shield their young child from witnessing the violence. Ebuka was then subjected to assault and coerced to produce drugs allegedly in his possession.

โ€œWhen their search proved fruitless, they forcibly escorted him to a waste dump, alleging he had concealed illegal substances there. Eyewitnesses further allege egregious misconduct, with officers resorting to coercive tactics, including requesting pepper spray after emerging from Mr Ebukaโ€™s residence.

โ€œDespite employing drug detection methods, no evidence was found, yet the relentless interrogation tragically led to his demise. Moreover, the lack of proper crime scene preservation raises grave doubts about the integrity of the investigation,โ€ the statement read in part.

The union further called for a thorough and impartial investigation into Ebukaโ€™s killing, as well as a broader look into police abuse in the Northern Cape.

โ€œNUSA urgently calls for an exhaustive, impartial inquiry into Prince Ebukaโ€™s killing and the broader systemic issues of police abuse in the Northern Cape.

โ€œJustice must prevail for the deceased, and the rights and safety of all individuals, regardless of nationality, must be safeguarded,โ€ it said.

Kgatelopele Local Municipality Mayor Irene Williams visited the scene and offered condolences, urging for calm and unity.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, condemned the incident and called for a full investigation, โ€œAnyone found culpable should face the music,โ€ he said.
