The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), Aliyu Abdullahi on Sunday said it would set up an agritourism national committee to foster revenue generation and development in the sector.
Abdullahi said Agritourism, which is not fully developed, would enhance the agricultural sector, encourage both local and foreign investors as well and achieve food and nutrition security when prioritised.
In a statement signed by Acting Director Information FMAFS Ezeaja Ikemefuna, the minister made this known during the celebration of 2024 Inaugural World Agritourism Day with the theme: ‘’Food Security for All’ held at the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Headquarters, Abuja.
According to him, Agritourism comprises a range of activities, from farm tours, agriculture festivals, farm stays, and educational programs that connect visitors with the agricultural landscape.
He added that ‘’ it will benefit farmers, who gain additional income, tourists who gain insights into agricultural activities relating to Agritourism ranging from farm tours and workshop to seasonal festivals and tastings of farm produced, among others.
‘’It enhances the tourism industry by increasing the number of visitors to the area and length of stay’’, he added.
Abdullahi noted that the development of Agritourism would also encourage agricultural revolution, industrialization for wealth and job creation, and growth in the non-oil sector.
Revealing the federal government’s role in implementing agritourism, Abdullahi said “A national committee would be established to drive and promote Nigeria’s agritourism.”
The Minister lauded the World Agritourism Organization (WAO), led by its President, Trust Ogboi for their pivotal role in developing agritourism and making the day’s celebration a reality.
