After 27 months in detention, former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court issued a two-week bail to Kyari to enable him to conclude the burial rites of his late mother, Yachilla Kyari.
The bail application’s determination is scheduled for Friday, May 31, in the ongoing trial on drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following Kyari’s arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.
Kyari’s mother, Yachilla Kyari, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, 2024.
Despite his absence at her burial, residents of Borno State paid their respects to her, and she was laid to rest according to Islamic rites on the same day.
In 2022, the Police Service Commission suspended Kyari, along with two senior police officers, Sunday Ubua and James Bawa, implicated in a cocaine deal.
Femi Babalola, spokesperson for the NDLEA, had alleged that Kyari and his Intelligence Response Team arrested drug traffickers arriving from Ethiopia with 25kg of cocaine but misappropriated 15kg of the seized substance for themselves.
