The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shipper’s Council( NSC) Pius Akuta has said the Council is poised to become the port sector regulator, with automated port service following a bill currently before the National Assembly.
According to Akuta, the move is expected to bring much-needed efficiency to the sector, promoting growth and development.
He said with such an Act in place Nigeria’s ports the NSC will play a vital role in streamlining operations, reducing bottlenecks, and increasing productivity, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic prosperity.
He stressed the importance of automating Nigeria’s ports using cutting-edge technology to minimise human contact and eradicate illegal activities.
He made the declaration during a two-day visit to the Port Harcourt Port, one of the country’s legacy ports.
According to Akuta, the visit aimed to familiarise himself with the sector and engage with regional stakeholders, while emphasising the need for technological advancements to enhance port efficiency and security.
By reducing human contact, the Executive Secretary explained that automation is expected to significantly decrease opportunities for corruption and illegal activities, promoting a more transparent and secure port environment.
He added that the move aligns with the government’s efforts to modernise and strengthen the country’s port infrastructure, enhancing Nigeria’s position as a key player in regional and global trade.
The CEO also praised the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy for his tireless efforts to attract investments and commissioning projects, including the recent successful commissioning of projects at Onne Port.
He, however, emphasised that collaboration among stakeholders is crucial to achieving the Ministry’s goals and driving the economy forward.
