THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the public to be wary of an alarming increase in phishing attacks on unsuspecting persons across various digital platforms.

According to a statement signed by the commissionโ€™s Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, in recent months, the commission has seen an increase in fraudulent schemes designed to trick people into disclosing sensitive personal information, including financial information, via deceptive emails, text messages, social media messengers and fake websites.

The commission said that phishing attackers frequently imitate legitimate businesses, financial institutions, or government agencies, using their victimsโ€™ trust for unlawful benefit.

The statement read, โ€œThe EFCC emphasizes the critical importance of vigilance and caution when encountering unsolicited communications or unfamiliar links, especially those requesting sensitive information or promising financial benefits.

โ€œIndividuals must verify the authenticity of any communication (message) or website before divulging personal details or engaging in financial transactions.

Furthermore, the commission urged the public, to promptly report any suspected phishing attempt or fraudulent activity to its nearest zonal command, or the nearest law enforcement agency.

โ€œTimely reporting enables swift action to be taken to disrupt criminal operations and protect potential victims from financial losses and identity theft,โ€ the statement added.
