In response to recent deportation orders issued against Nigerian students at Teesside University in the United Kingdom, the Federal Government has taken decisive steps to address the situation.
Led by Ambassador Christian Okeke, a representative of the Nigerian Embassy in the UK, a delegation will engage with the university’s management in search of a resolution.
The initiative stems from a virtual meeting convened by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Sunday.
Ambassador Okeke, President of the Nigerian Students Union UK, Yemi Soile, and affected students participated in the deliberations.
NiDCOM’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, confirmed the planned intervention in a statement on Wednesday, highlighting that the students conveyed their experiences during the meeting and expressed optimism for a positive outcome.
Dabiri-Erewa, while urging the students to maintain composure and avoid taking matters into their own hands, appealed to Teesside University to ensure fairness and justice in their treatment of the students.
The issue gained prominence following a protest staged by Nigerian students at Teesside University on May 22, 2024.
The university authorities had directed some students to leave the UK, citing non-payment of school fees as the reason behind the deportation orders.
