A tanker exploded today at the Obiri-Ikwerre flyover on the East-West road in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
The incident occurred about 9:30 a.m. this morning, when a tanker carrying what is thought to be Liquefied Natural Gas overturned and exploded while attempting to navigate the roundabout.
The force of the explosion was felt kilometres away, with some neighbours reporting shattered windows and others experiencing vibrations.
At press time, firefighters from the Fire Service were attempting to extinguish the fire, as a swarm of bystanders gathered nearby, with substantial security presence also visible.
Eyewitnesses reported that there were no casualties since the driver fled the scene just before the explosion.
Meanwhile drama ensued when a scavenger attempted to steal components of the truck. He was however apprehended and handed over to the police.
