In a surprising turn of events, former Ajax star Finidi George has tendered his resignation as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
The announcement was made public by Toyin Ibitoye, a former media officer for the Super Eagles, via a post on X.com earlier today.
According to Ibitoye, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
George, 53, took over as the head coach following the conclusion of Jose Peseiro’s contract in February.
Initially appointed as an assistant coach, George ascended to the top role in May amid hopes of rejuvenating the team’s performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. However, recent setbacks in matches against South Africa and Benin prompted the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to reconsider their coaching setup.
The NFF’s decision to appoint a foreign coach above George has reportedly been a source of friction.
Despite George’s efforts and a reported monthly salary of N15 million, his tenure has been marked by challenges and now faces an unexpected downgrade. His contract, originally set for one year, will see a reduction in salary to N5 million per month, and his chosen coaching staff will be replaced by those selected by the incoming foreign coach.
In a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George expressed dissatisfaction with the NFF’s support and raised concerns about the commitment levels of Nigeria’s top players during crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
The resignation of Finidi George leaves the Super Eagles at a critical juncture as they navigate their future coaching structure and prepare for upcoming international fixtures.
