Former chairmen from 21 out of 23 local government areas in Rivers State defied a police advisory on Monday, staging protests in their respective council areas amidst ongoing tensions over leadership transitions.
Aligned with the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, these former council bosses voiced their grievances through public demonstrations, despite warnings against such actions issued by the state Police Command.
In Buguma, the headquarters of Asari-Toru LGA, former Chairman Onengiyeofori George led supporters in a lively procession through town streets, resonating with chants in solidarity with Wike.
Demonstrators brandished placards demanding the police to maintain their presence at council headquarters.
Messages such as “Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes”, and “There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council” adorned the protest.
Trouble brewed in Asari-Toru LGA when alleged operatives of Asari Dokubo’s private military outfit, known as Amama soldiers, attempted to disrupt the protest, nearly escalating into violence.
Prompt police intervention averted clashes, and the demonstrators subsequently submitted a formal protest letter to law enforcement authorities.
In Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku-Toru LGA, another group expressed support for the ongoing police closure of council premises, echoing similar sentiments of administrative stability.
Last Tuesday, the police assumed control of all 23 LGA council secretariats in the oil-rich South-South region following a crisis stemming from the expiration of tenure for former LGA chairmen.
The turmoil has tragically resulted in three fatalities, underscoring the intensity of local political tensions.
