Ruud Van Nistelrooy returns to Man United as coach, Benni McCarthy leaves

FORMER Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is back at the club in a coaching role, while Benni McCarthy has left, the club confirmed today.

Van Nistelrooy, who also starred for the Netherlands, played for Manchester United from 2001 to 2006, registering 150 goals and 30 assists in 219 appearances. He won the 2002/2003 English Premier League title with the club as well as the FA Cup the following season and the League Cup in 2006 before leaving for Real Madrid.

โ€œManchester United has appointed Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as assistant managers of the menโ€™s first team, to work under Erik ten Hag until June 2026,โ€ the club announced today.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he was happy to have his fellow Dutchmen join him at Old Trafford.

He said: โ€œI am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge and new energy to the staff. Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level.โ€

Dan Ashworth, sporting director, said: โ€œTogether with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our menโ€™s first-team operations, and refreshing the coaching staff is an important part of that.

โ€œItโ€™s a particular pleasure to welcome Ruud back to the club where he enjoyed so much success as a player, and I know that he and Rene will help reinforce the winning mentality and high standards we are aiming for.โ€

Manchester United noted that Steve McClaren and Darren Fletcher remain key parts of the staff as senior first-team coach and first-team coach, respectively, while Mitchell van der Gaag and formst South Africa striker McCarthy have left the club.

Ten Hag added: โ€œMitchell has decided that now is the right time for him to pursue his own ambitions in a number one position; I want to pay tribute to his fantastic service over the past two years, and also to Benni for his important contributions. We send them our thanks and best wishes for the future.โ€
