The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the appointment of six persons to serve in the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, (LASIEC).
Justice Bola Okikiolu Ighile (Retd) will serve as Chairman of the electoral body, while Samson Ajibade, Oluwo Durojaiye, Dr. Metilelu Olusola, Aileru Abeeb Dapo and Oladele Adekanye will serve as members.
The state government made the announcement on Wednesday, adding that details of the swearing-in ceremony will be announced in due course.
The appointments by Sanwo-Olu is coming amid calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the responsibility of conducting local governments elections in the country.
In a landmark judgement last Thursday, the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to the local government areas, and declared withholding of funds meant for local governments by state governments as unconstitutional.
Following the apex court judgement, the National Assembly has disclosed its plans to amend the constitution, so as to cede the responsibility of conducting election at the local government level to INEC.
Chairman, Senate Services Committee, Senator Sunday Karimi, APC, Kogi West, who disclosed this on Monday, said the National Assembly would ensure that state governments complied with the judgement of the Supreme Court by amending the Constitution.
“These include grey areas like the transfer of the responsibility of the conduct of elections to the local councils from the various state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” Karimi said.
