At just 32 years old, Coach Rena Wakama has already made significant strides in African basketball.
After a year at the helm of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, Wakama has become the first female coach to win an Afrobasket title, leading the team to their fourth consecutive and sixth overall championship.
Wakama’s journey to coaching prominence began with a strong background in basketball as a player. She played college basketball in the United States and gained valuable experience in various coaching roles before taking over D’Tigress.
Her deep understanding of the game, combined with her innovative coaching techniques, has quickly translated into success on the court.
Beyond the Afrobasket title, Wakama has made history by being the first coach to guide Nigeria to a victory against a top 3 ranked team at the Olympics. This achievement has cemented her reputation as a strategic and inspirational leader on the international stage.
