On Wednesday, the Ogun State High Court ordered that the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests be restricted to four specific locations within the state.
This decision also limits the timeframe of the protests to between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Justice O. Ogunfowora granted the application moved by the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN).
The judge directed that all protests under the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria slogan, or any other slogan, from August 1 to August 10, must be limited in place and time.
The court specified that protests could only occur at the following locations:
- MKO Stadium, Abeokuta
- Ansar-ud-Deen Comprehensive High School, Ota
- Remo Divisional High School, Sagamu
- Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode
The Attorney-General explained that these locations are spread across the four divisions of the state within the three senatorial districts, ensuring that protesters in those areas can participate conveniently and under adequate protection, without infringing on the rights of non-protesting members of the public.
Justice Ogunfowora’s ruling also prohibited any protests from taking place outside the specified hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Additionally, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State was directed to enforce this order and ensure compliance with the location and time restrictions.
The judge declared that this order would remain in effect for seven days and required the state to serve the application on notice within that period.
Furthermore, the time for the protesters to respond to the application was shortened to 72 hours.
The case has been adjourned to August 6, 2024.
