Tinubu Reiterates Support for Peaceful Protest

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his support for the planned nationwide protest, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace during the demonstrations.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Wale Edu, disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

Edu highlighted the economic improvements under the current administration, noting that the Federal Governmentโ€™s revenue had doubled in Q1 2024 compared to 2023 due to diligent measures and the application of technology.

โ€œThe President, as a democrat, believes in federalism, freedom of speech, human rights, and rule of law,โ€ Edu said.

Edu also detailed the progress in various sectors: โ€œWe have recovered from the era of debt payment. Revenue has risen as a result of the application of diligent measures, and has doubled and is expected to maintain that trajectory. The President understands the feelings of the people, particularly the high and elevated cost of living, which is not peculiar to Nigeria. There has not been full recovery from COVID.โ€

The Minister added that inflation in Nigeria is decreasing and the economy has been recovering over the past 15 months: โ€œLow transportation cost is being provided for through the CNG initiative.โ€

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, echoed the Presidentโ€™s commitment to good governance.

In his speech titled โ€œPeace and Stability: The Bedrock of our Economic Recovery and Driver for Good Governance,โ€ Akume highlighted the governmentโ€™s efforts to improve the economy and urged patience from the protesters.

โ€œPresident Bola Tinubu is doing all within his powers to provide good governance to the people,โ€ Akume said.

He acknowledged the economic challenges faced by Nigerians due to bold policy decisions but emphasized the long-term benefits.

โ€œEconomic prosperity for the nation remains the ultimate goal of the administration of President Bola Tinubu because it is the engine that drives progress, lifts families from poverty, and builds strong, resilient societies.โ€

Akume stressed the importance of peace and stability for economic success: โ€œTo achieve this goal, we must enjoy peace and stability because it is the cornerstone upon which we build trust, cooperation, and shared purpose. When peace reigns, policies yield results, businesses thrive, investments flourish, and creativity is unleashed.โ€

The Federal Government continues to appeal for patience and understanding as it navigates the nationโ€™s economic recovery.
