The Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, has expressed deep sadness and shock over the passing of Nigerian music legend, Onyeka Onwenu.
The renowned singer, songwriter, and actress, known as the “Elegant Stallion,” died on Tuesday, July 30, at the age of 72, after collapsing at a friend’s birthday party.
In a statement, the Minister described Onwenu as a “true legend” and “shaper of our cultural identity.” She praised Onwenu’s innovative spirit, ability to bring people together through her art, and her significant impact on the music industry.
The Minister acknowledged Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian music and entertainment, saying she used her music to promote unity, harmony, and patriotism.
Onwenu’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from the music industry and beyond. Azuka Jebose, former Entertainment Editor of Punch Newspaper, shared a personal reflection on how he came to brand Onwenu as the “Elegant Stallion.” Azuh Arinze, chairman of Yes International Ventures, described Onwenu’s demise as “numbing, shocking, sudden, and sad” and praised her creativity, carriage, confidence, charisma, character, composure, and competence.
The Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy will work with stakeholders in the music industry to organize a befitting tribute to Onwenu’s life and legacy. Onwenu’s music blended genres like highlife, reggae, and pop, often addressing social and political issues. Some of her most popular songs include “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.”
