The Kano State Government has refuted reports that it spent over N10 billion on furniture and fittings in the second quarter of 2024. According to the State Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Alhaji Musa Sulaiman Shanono, the funds were actually used to settle liabilities of local contractors domiciled in the state Ministry of Finance.
Shanono explained that the Budget Performance Report for Kano State is prepared quarterly and includes details of original approved budget appropriation, actual expenditures, and cumulative expenditures for the year to date. He noted that the second quarter report showed a total outlay of N437.3 billion, with a revenue performance of 50.9% and expenditure performance of 38%.
The Commissioner attributed the misleading reports to an error in the budget populating template, which incorrectly categorized the expenditure as furniture and fittings instead of settlement of liabilities. He assured that the template is being updated to correctly reflect the appropriate expenditure.
Shanono emphasized the state government’s commitment to transparency and openness in financial information dissemination, citing the quarterly publication of budget performance reports as a feedback mechanism to citizens. He expressed willingness to sustain partnerships between the government, media, and citizens to achieve transparency in public spending.
