Imo State Residents Abstain from Hunger Protest

In contrast to the nationwide protests against economic hardship, residents of Imo State have remained notably absent from the demonstrations.

As of the time of filing this report, no protesters were seen anywhere in the state.

Quiet Streets and Closed Businesses

While the streets of Owerri, the state capital, are scanty, banks, offices, and shops were observed to be closed.

Security personnel were visible, conducting surveillance at various parts of the city to maintain order.

At popular markets in Owerri, only a few traders were seen displaying their wares, indicating a general hesitance to engage in regular business activities amidst the tense atmosphere.

Resident Reactions

Oliver Nnadi, a resident of Owerri, who spoke to Vanguard, expressed his reluctance to join the protests, citing the stateโ€™s earlier expression of dissent through voting in the presidential election.

โ€œWe did our own protest during the election in 2023. We saw this coming, and we voted for a better Nigeria. But some people said no. Why should we hit the streets now for protest? Iโ€™m not ready for that,โ€ he told Vanguard correspondent.

Lingering Tensions

The residents of Imo State appear to be still reeling from the tension and apprehension caused by sporadic shootings across Owerri on Wednesday. This unrest may have contributed to their decision to abstain from the current protests.

As the nationwide movement against hardship continues to gain momentum in other parts of the country, Imo State remains an outlier, choosing to watch from the sidelines rather than actively participate in the demonstrations.
