Following the conclusion of nationwide protests on August 10, 2024, Deji Adeyanju, a prominent lawyer and activist, announced the release of 26 protesters and journalists who were previously detained by security agencies across Nigeria.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Adeyanju revealed that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of many others still in custody.
Adeyanju detailed the release, stating, “We have been able to release 26 protesters, including six journalists, from the Nigerian Police Force and Department of State Security, DSS, in Abuja. Most of those released were males, with only two females among them. All were released unconditionally.”
However, Adeyanju expressed concern over the number of protesters still detained, particularly in states like Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Jigawa.
“In Abuja alone, there are about 16 protesters still in custody, while in Kano, there are hundreds. The exact number across other states remains unclear,” he said.
Regarding the detained journalists, Adeyanju confirmed that all six who were arrested in the Federal Capital Territory and Kaduna have been released, with the last journalist being freed four days ago.
Adeyanju issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, giving a 48-hour ultimatum for the release of all remaining protesters.
“If they fail to release everyone, we will proceed with legal action for the breach of these individuals’ rights,” he declared.
Criticizing President Tinubu, Adeyanju remarked, “It is ironic and sad that a former perpetual protester has now become an oppressor, showing disregard for the fundamental rights of protesters in a democracy. The President must immediately order the unconditional release of all detained protesters.”
Despite the end of the official protest, Adeyanju hinted at the possibility of further demonstrations if the government does not address the protesters’ demands.
“We haven’t set a new date yet, but we will continue to press on until the economic challenges and other issues that sparked the protests are resolved,” he said.
He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable, stating, “Citizens must rise up and hold their leaders accountable at all levels.
The success of this protest is just the beginning; more will come if the demands are not met.”
