Nigerian electricity consumers have voiced mounting frustrations over unresolved power supply issues, directing their grievances to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in recent complaints.
NewsNGR recalls that in June, NERC approved a significant N21bn allocation for the metering of electricity customers by Distribution Companies.
Despite this, many consumers claimed that they are still on estimated billings, alleging that there was no improvement in the metering services.
An Electricity Consumer with Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED), Chiedozie Kelvin Chukwuma with X account @Kelvinpodolski, in her petition to NERC Nigeria@NERCNG, expressed concern on the delay, noting that no visible improvements have been made in metering services since the allocation was announced.
She said, “In June, it was published by various media houses that NERC approved N21bn for DISCOS to meter electricity customers. Up till now, we’ve not heard anything about the metering. I’ve also asked about this, but haven’t gotten any positive response. I’m a PHED customer’’.
Similarly, a resident of Iyewo Estate in Akesan, Lagos, Nwudu Austin, said his community has been struggling with a malfunctioning transformer for 15 years.
Austin revealed that the local transformer has been out of order for an extended period, forcing residents to rely on generators.
According to him, despite repeated requests for a replacement transformer, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKDC) has yet to provide a solution.
“We are in total darkness day and night at Iyewo Estate, Akesan, near Igando, LASU -Igando express way, Lagos. Our Transformer is bad, IKDC refused to give us another one. For 15 years now, never a night that I have not used my generator. We need 500kva Transformer’’, he said via his X account @AustinNwudu.
Another X user @Eloka208784, said in Abuja, a neighborhood with over 3,000 households has been in the dark for nearly a year, adding that after raising over N2m for transformer repairs, the residents are still without power.
According to him, the affected community members have reached out to NERC, seeking intervention to resolve the ongoing blackout.
