Ogun REC, Niyi Ijalaye Slumps, Dies In Abuja After INEC Meeting

Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun State, has passed away.

Ijalaye reportedly slumped and died in his hotel room in Abuja on Monday evening, shortly after attending a meeting of RECs at the commissionโ€™s headquarters.

The meeting, which was chaired by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, focused on preparations for the upcoming off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Ijalaye, who was seen in a blue striped outfit, was said to have appeared healthy throughout the session.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, spokesperson for the INEC chairman, who confirmed the incident to TheCable said, โ€œUnfortunately, we lost the REC yesterday after the meeting.โ€

Ijalaye, a native of Ondo State, was appointed as the Ogun State REC in March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos.

In June, Essien Etop Andrew, a deputy comptroller in charge of revenue at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), collapsed and died while responding to questions from the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts. Andrew was rushed to the National Assembly clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
