THE transfer impasse involving Conor Gallagher has finally been resolved as the England midfielder has now made the switch from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid.
Gallagher had travelled to Madrid to complete the deal days ago, but a move in the other direction involving Samu Omorodion collapsed and the Englishman had to fly back home without signing, even after passing his Atletico medical.
He returned to Madid last night and the deal has now been sealed, with Gallagher costing Atletico €42 million.
“Atlético de Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Conor Gallagher, who has signed for the club until 2029. The midfielder was born in England in 2000 and is a full international for his country,” the Spanish club announced today on their official website.
“After joining Chelsea’s academy at the age of eight, Gallagher spent more than a decade in the London club’s youth academy.
“He went on loan to Charlton Athletic in 2019, where he made 26 appearances, scoring six goals and providing four assists. This spell was followed by loan moves at Swansea City (21 appearances and seven assists), West Bromwich Albion (32 appearances, two goals and two assists) and finally Crystal Palace, where he was named Player of the Season after scoring eight goals and registering five assists in 39 appearances.
“He made his first-team debut for Chelsea in August 2022 and has since made 95 appearances for the London club, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.”
Gallagher made his senior England debut in November 2021 and was called up for the 2022 World Cup and this year’s European Championship, in which he reached the final with his country. To date, the 24-year-old has made 18 appearances for the England senior national team.
“The midfielder underwent and passed the relevant medical examination at the Centro de Medicina Deportiva de Alto Rendimiento Vithas – Invictum at the Hospital Universitario Madrid Arturo Soria,” Atletico Madrid added.
