The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the death of two police officers following attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi’ite group.
The incident occurred at Wuse Junction, Abuja, where the officers were stationed at a checkpoint near the traffic light.
According to a statement from the FCT Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the assailants “wielded machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives” during the attack, which he said was unprovoked.
The attack resulted in the deaths of two officers, with three others left unconscious and currently receiving medical treatment. The attackers also set ablaze three police patrol vehicles.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the violent act, stating, “The unprovoked attack on our officers is a grave violation of the law. We will ensure that those responsible are brought to book.”
He assured that “several arrests have been made,” and pledged to pursue justice for the victims.
The situation is now under control, and normalcy has been restored to the area. The police will provide further updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured officers as more information becomes available.
SP Josephine Adeh added, “The police are committed to maintaining peace and order and will take all necessary measures to address such attacks.”
