One Feared Dead As Speed Boat Capsizes In Bayelsa

Bayelsa State again has been thrown into mourning after a speedboat carrying 15 passengers capsized over the weekend in the Okubie Community River within the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The boat was reportedly travelling from Yenagoa to Oporoma, the headquarters of Southern Ijaw LGA, when the accident occurred.

Reports indicated that while 14 passengers were rescued by residents, one person drowned as the water level rose.

The incident comes more than two weeks after a boat carrying an unspecified number of passengers, travelling from Ekeni in Southern Ijaw to Yenagoa, the state capital on Wednesday August 7, 2024 claimed the lives of at least 20 people after a mishap.

Ipgansi Ogoniba, the state chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), who confirmed the accident on Sunday noted that the cause of the mishap remains unknown.

He also stated that 14 passengers were rescued, and one person died.

When NewsNGR contacted the Bayelsa state police spokesperson ASP Musa Muhammed, he stated that he not aware of the incident.
