Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling in transfer talks as Manchester United pursue Chelsea target

Manchester United have reportedly initiated discussions with Brentford over a potential late move for striker Ivan Toney as the summer transfer window nears its conclusion,Soccernet.football reports.

The 28-year-old England international has been at the center of transfer speculation throughout the summer after expressing his desire for a โ€˜big moveโ€™ last season.

As United seek to bolster their attacking options, Toney has emerged as a viable target before the transfer deadline on Friday.

According to the Evening Standard, โ€˜preliminary conversationsโ€™ between Manchester United and Brentford have taken place.

However, Toney is reportedly prioritising a move to Chelsea, and negotiations with United have not yet advanced to a serious stage.

Brentford, meanwhile, are hoping that interest from multiple clubs could ignite a bidding war for their star forward.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are also reportedly considering an offer for Toney, especially after Al-Ahliโ€™s initial bid for the striker was rejected.

Toney has been notably absent from Thomas Frankโ€™s squad for Brentfordโ€™s opening two Premier League games, with the Beesโ€™ boss acknowledging the ongoing transfer interest in the player.

As the transfer window edges closer to its end, Brentford may be forced to accept a fee below their initial ยฃ50 million asking price or risk losing Toney for nothing next summer.

In addition to their pursuit of Toney, Manchester United have reportedly stepped up talks with Chelsea over a possible move for left-back Ben Chilwell.

With Luke Shawโ€™s injury concerns persisting, United are keen to strengthen their defence.

The Independent reports that a loan deal for Chilwell could be on the cards, although his high wages at Stamford Bridge remain a stumbling block in negotiations.

Furthermore, discussions between the two clubs have also involved potential moves for Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling as both United and Chelsea look to resolve lingering squad issues before the transfer window closes.

While United have not yet dismissed the possibility of signing Sterling, talks around a deal for Chilwell appear to be more advanced.
