In a tragic act of terrorism, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a brutal attack on Faudiya School, an Islamic educational institution affiliated with the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), in the Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, left the community reeling in horror as innocent students were mercilessly killed.
Credible sources speaking to Daily Trust reported that the assailants struck the Hausari quarters of Geidam LGA at approximately 3:44 am.
Exploiting the cover of darkness, the terrorists targeted the school at a time when the students were most vulnerable—while they slept.
“The incident occurred at around 3:44 am when the gunmen invaded Faudiya School, a well-known Shiite school in Geidam,” one source confirmed.
“They (gunmen) attacked the school when these youths were asleep, brought them outside, and shot them dead.”
This calculated and heinous attack has left an indelible scar on the community, as it claimed the lives of several students.
The atmosphere in Geidam is now fraught with tension and fear, with residents terrified by the senseless violence that shattered their community.
A vigilante who spoke to the newspaper disclosed that three members of the Shia sect were killed during the attack, while one person sustained injuries as he attempted to escape.
“We don’t know who they (gunmen) are, but all we know is that they killed three students in the school. One person who tried to escape during the incident was injured, and he has been hospitalized,” the vigilante reported.
The Yobe State Police Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident but refrained from providing further details.
This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents attributed to Boko Haram, a terrorist group that has waged an insurgency in Nigeria for over a decade, particularly targeting schools, religious institutions, and communities across the northeastern region.
The Faudiya School, being a Shia-affiliated institution, may have been specifically targeted by the sectarian-driven violence that has characterized much of Boko Haram’s activities in the region.
As the community mourns the loss of its young members, there are growing calls for increased security measures and the need for concerted efforts to curb the insurgency that continues to wreak havoc in Yobe State and other parts of Nigeria.
