On Tuesday, a truck laden with a container fell along the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Expressway causing heavy gridlock for commuters heading to or returning from the Abuja International Airport and general road users.
The situation that occurred on the main lane of the expressway, resulted in a diversion for the commuters going in opposite directions.
The long ride from the Dantata Bridge to the scene of the accident witnessed commuters stuck in traffic while those lucky to have sighted the gridlock made a quick u-turn, or packed their vehicles waiting for a good time to proceed with their journey.
Personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lugbe Police Division, and Vehicle Inspection Officers were sighted managing the traffic to ensure that commuters taking the diversion use the road without escalating the situation.
NewsNGR, however, could not confirm at what period of the day the accident occurred, but the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Lugbe Division at the scene of the accident, told NewsNGR that the container with number: PCIU-907227 (5) belonged to the Economic Community of West African States.
The DPO added that the container is one of those that is not permitted to convey inflammable products.
While the container fell in a horizontal position on the main lane of the expressway, the truck carrying it was sighted at a distance from the truck.
At the time of filing the report, operatives of FRSC were making attempts to take the container off the road for ease of traffic.
NewsNGR, however, gathered upon arriving at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport that many passengers had either missed their flight or were stuck in traffic.
