OGUN: Two persons drown in boat mishap

TWO people have reportedly drowned in a boat accident in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, within the Ogun West Senatorial District.

The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, in a statement released in Abeokuta, the state capital.

โ€œThe command received a report of a tragic event at the Ipokia Division on September 12, 2024, at approximately 7:00 a.m. Two individuals, Awhanse Jimoh and Ahohe Jimoh, from Ilepa Village in Ipokia, informed the Divisional Police Officer that two wood merchants had been swept into a river,โ€ she said.

โ€œAccording to their account, two other individuals, Ahohe Seido and a person known as Dogbon, were transporting firewood along the Gbodo Jego River in Ijofin, Ipokia, Ogun State, heading to the Benin Republic for sale when the accident occurred.

โ€œDuring the journey, a sudden strong current overturned their boat, causing all occupants to fall into the river. Despite rescue efforts, only two people were saved and brought ashore.

โ€œSadly, Ahohe Seido and Dogbon did not survive, and although divers conducted an extensive search, their bodies have not yet been recovered.โ€

She added that community divers are continuing search and rescue operations to locate the missing individuals, while an investigation has been launched to verify the details of the incident and the survivorsโ€™ statements.
