The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has highlighted the significant advantages of its new Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR), an innovative system designed to streamline vehicle verification and enhance road safety across the country.
In a series of social media posts shared on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi announced the launch of the E-CMR under the leadership of Inspector-General Olukayode Egbetokun.
He emphasized that the system is part of a broader effort to modernize the nation’s policing and improve public safety through advanced digital tools.
The E-CMR allows vehicle owners to register their vehicles digitally and facilitates a swift response in case of emergencies.
Adejobi explained that vehicle owners can flag a stolen vehicle in real-time through their online profiles, which instantly alerts all NPF field officers nationwide, increasing the chances of rapid recovery.
“If your vehicle is registered with the NPF E-CMR and gets stolen, you can instantly flag it as stolen through your online profile,” the NPF stated.
One of the standout benefits of the E-CMR, according to Adejobi, is the elimination of physical paperwork. “No more stopping to check papers—our officers are equipped with cutting-edge tech to verify documents in real-time,” he said, adding that the system enables drivers to access all vehicle information digitally—offering a quick, easy, and secure alternative to traditional documentation.
The E-CMR system was initially introduced in July 2024 following an order from Inspector-General Egbetokun to digitize Nigeria’s motor vehicle registration system. This move is expected to significantly improve the nation’s safety and security framework, while bringing greater convenience to vehicle owners through streamlined documentation processes.
In a previous announcement in June, Adejobi noted that the E-CMR would simplify key vehicle-related services, such as ownership transfers, license renewals, and updates to engine or chassis details. He also emphasized the system’s role in curbing the sale of stolen vehicles, making it easier for law enforcement to recover them.
With the E-CMR now in place, the Nigeria Police Force is optimistic that the digitalization of vehicle registration will revolutionize how vehicle information is managed, contributing to improved security on Nigeria’s roads.
