STUDENTS and staff of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State, who were abducted by bandits, have been freed after spending seven months in captivity.
The victims were reportedly kidnapped during an attack in the Gusau area in February of this year.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed their release in a report on X today.
The report stated, “Abducted students of Federal University Gusau and staff regain freedom.”
While details regarding the circumstances of their release are not fully known, sources cited by Zagazola suggested that security forces were instrumental in facilitating the victims’ return.
“It was learned that the students and staff were taken during a bandit attack in the Gusau area in February,” Zagazola noted.
This news brings relief to the families and the academic community who have anxiously awaited the safe return of their loved ones.
Zagazola further affirmed, “After an extended period in captivity, it has been confirmed that all those abducted have returned in good health.”
In September 2023, a large number of students from the Federal University Gusau were reportedly kidnapped.
Abubakar Sani, a resident of Sabon Gida village, told journalist that the bandits, arriving in significant numbers, invaded the students’ off-campus housing in the village, targeting mostly female students.
Sani recounted that the bandits attacked three hostels around 4:00 am.
