Following a resolution by the House of Representatives to investigate allegations of bribery against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Joint Committees of the House have formally invited the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, to appear before them.
In a letter dated September 27, 2024, the committee requested that the EFCC Chairman and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service appear on Monday, September 30, along with all officers involved in the allegations.
These allegations stem from a trending social media voice conversation involving Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced earlier this year to six months in prison for abuse of the naira.
The conversation suggested that Bobrisky paid N15 million to the EFCC to have money laundering charges against him dropped and that he spent his time in a VIP facility rather than a standard prison.
The House Committee is also extending invitations to Bobrisky and social media influencer Martins Otse, known as Very Dark Man, who released the voice recording.
In a related development, Folakemi Falana, daughter of renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, has strongly refuted the bribery allegations linked to her father and brother, Falz. In a post on her Instagram handle, she addressed the accusations made by Very Dark Man, labeling them as baseless and defamatory.
โTwo different letters from Falana & Falana on behalf of our clients Femi Falana SAN and Folarin Falz Falana giving VDM 24 hours to retract his extremely defamatory statements or risk legal action,โ she wrote.
โItโs even crazier that all it takes is for a ridiculous character like VDM to accuse my dad and Falz of bribery, corruption, and perversion of the course of Justice, and you suddenly forget who they are and what they stand for.โ
Folakemi further stated that the rumors circulating online, amplified by Very Dark Man, falsely suggest that her father and brother were complicit in helping Bobrisky secure favorable treatment while in prison. She clarified that her father has never had any communication with Bobrisky, either directly or indirectly, and that her brother, Falz, was approached solely for financial assistance to secure a VIP spot while in prison.
