…Gains Remi Tinubu’s Backing
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed strong support for Governor Umo Eno’s decision to appoint his daughter, Mrs. Helen Eno Obareki, as the new First Lady of Akwa Ibom State. This follows the recent passing of his wife, Pastor Patience Umo Eno.
During a condolence visit to the Eno family in Uyo on Friday, Senator Tinubu praised the governor’s decision, highlighting that it aligns with practices seen in other countries like the United States.
She emphasized that the appointment would help preserve Pastor Patience Eno’s legacy, particularly through her pet project, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA).
Accompanied by Hajia Nana Shettima, the wife of the Vice President, and a delegation of wives of state governors and National Assembly presiding officers, Tinubu offered her condolences to the Eno family. She commended the late First Lady’s contributions to Akwa Ibom and her support for national projects, including her husband’s ARISE governance agenda.
Governor Umo Eno, reflecting on the life of his late wife, shared personal memories of their nearly four-decade-long marriage.
“I married her when she was 19, and I was 22. I called her Oluwa-Kemi because she was truly a gift from God, a source of comfort and succor,” he said.
“Her passing is an irreplaceable loss. She was my embodiment of the biblical virtuous woman, my greatest supporter, and toughest critic. Her absence will be felt for the rest of my life.”
Regarding the transition of First Lady duties, Governor Eno introduced his daughter, Mrs. Helen Eno Obareki, to continue the work started by her late mother.
“It is not an easy task ahead,” he acknowledged, adding that Helen would work closely with the Deputy Governor and the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare to maintain the Office of the First Lady.
Senator Tinubu, offering words of encouragement to Helen, said, “Your mom didn’t bring you to me for nothing, and it’s a blessing that her colleagues and the Vice President’s wife are here to support you. I know you well, and I believe God will guide you. You will accomplish even more than your mother, and He will grant you good health.”
In a lighter moment during a separate condolence visit from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Eno addressed rumors about him considering remarriage.
He humorously dismissed the idea, stating, “I’m not considering remarrying anytime soon. I don’t have the money to pay another bride price,” while reaffirming that his late wife’s legacy would live on through their daughter’s work in the First Lady’s Office.
The late Pastor Patience Umo Eno had been a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and social welfare in Akwa Ibom, and her daughter is expected to continue her work in these areas.
Governor Eno emphasized that Helen’s appointment ensures the continuity of programs initiated by his late wife, keeping her vision alive in the state.
