The state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was on Saturday morning rocked by explosives suspected to be dynamite.
The explosion shattered the building located along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital even as voting in the controversial local government elections begin.
A viral video of the incident in circulation showed some people suspected to be workers at the facilities going round to ascertain the extent of the damage
The explosion destroyed the gate of the secretariat, bringing down doors and windows. Other properties in the facility were also destroyed.
The APC which is aligned with a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state under the control of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike pulled out of the election citing a court order.
The PDP even though controls the state under Governor Sim Fubara, does not have candidates for the elections as its state chapter under Wike’s control is opposing Fubara in order to stop him from controlling the grassroots of the PDP.
Both the APC and PDP staged protests against the elections in the past week and called for cancellation of the polls.
Fubara, who insisted the pols must hold, had his associates moved to the All Peoples Party where they are candidates.
This is the second time the APC would be witnessing explosion in the lead up to the LG elections.
The APP Secretariat in the state had also been bombed when it was speculated that Fubara was dumping the PDP for the APP.
The political crisis which began over who controls the state resources and political structure of the PDP also witnessed the bombing of the state assembly earlier in the year.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, promised to issue official statement when I’m due course.
