Violence Erupts in Parts of Rivers Following Swearing-In of LG Chairmen

Tensions have flared in parts of Rivers State following the swearing-in of newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday, after the elections held on Saturday, October 5th.

Violent incidents have been reported, including gunfire and attacks on local government area (LGA) secretariats.

Hoodlums set ablaze the Ikwerre and Eleme LGA Secretariats, causing extensive damage.

In Obio Akpor and Ahoada East LGAs, unrest and gunshots were reported, leading to heightened fear among residents. Ahoada East, in particular, has seen one person shot dead, with several others feared injured from gun wounds.

The Nigerian Army has since taken over the Ahoada East Council Secretariat to restore peace, but the situation remains volatile in some parts of the state as security forces attempt to bring the violence under control.

Authorities are urging calm, promising that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as investigations continue.
