Amidst ongoing unrest in parts of Rivers State, Amb. Chijioke Ihunwo, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, has addressed supporters following violent incidents allegedly linked to pro-Wike groups.
The unrest, which affected the Obio/Akpor LGA Secretariat and surrounding areas, sparked concerns over the security of key infrastructures.
Speaking to a crowd on Monday, Ihunwo expressed defiance against attempts to destabilize the local government, following reports of attacks on other LGA secretariats in the state.
“They have burned other LGAs but they can’t burn Obio/Akpor LGA; anybody that tries it, we will visit his house,” Ihunwo stated firmly. His comments have drawn attention as the region grapples with tensions following the fallout over local political alignments.
In a move that signifies a break from previous loyalties, Ihunwo also announced the renaming of the Obio/Akpor Secretariat complex, formerly named after Nyesom Wike, the current FCT Minister and former governor of Rivers State.
The facility will now be known as the Obi Wali Secretariat Complex. This action underscores a shift in political power and alliances within the state, following the departure of Wike from the governorship.
The unrest and subsequent address highlight growing divisions in Rivers State’s political landscape, as local authorities seek to maintain control and ensure the safety of public assets amidst rising tensions.
