In a stern response to Monday’s coordinated arson attacks on three local government secretariats, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed swift and decisive action against those responsible.
The governor declared that the incident would not go unpunished, promising a thorough investigation in collaboration with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Speaking at the swearing-in of four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasized that this attack was a direct challenge to the security and stability of the state.
He highlighted that prior warnings had been given to local council chairmen about possible threats, and commended his supporters for their restraint during the violent confrontations.
“This administration will not tolerate this type of lawlessness,” Fubara stated. “We will not only identify those responsible but ensure they are made to face the full weight of the law.”
The arson, which saw the Ikwere and Emohua Local Government Council secretariats set ablaze, came after police officers guarding the state’s 23 council secretariats were abruptly withdrawn, reportedly under the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The withdrawal has been linked to escalating tensions, with political rivalries stoking unrest in the affected areas.
Fubara expressed frustration over how the recent political crisis has overshadowed the achievements of his administration. To rectify this, he announced plans to highlight his government’s progress later this month, while calling on the newly sworn-in commissioners to contribute towards stabilizing the state’s socio-economic landscape.
Addressing the pressing issue of crude oil theft, the governor stressed the need to increase oil production in Rivers State by tackling theft and sabotage, a move he believes is crucial to both the state’s economic prosperity and the nation’s revenue.
The newly appointed commissioners, which include Otamiri John-Ngubo and Evans Bipi, were selected with loyalty and regional political balance in mind, according to the governor.
