The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the death of a police officer, Saka Ganiyu, following an altercation with a soldier in Lagos on October 9, 2024.

The incident reportedly occurred after a disagreement over a traffic violation.

In a statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the division expressed regret over the tragedy.

“The incident is highly regrettable,” Ayeni stated, confirming that the soldier involved has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and disciplinary action.

The altercation reportedly began when soldiers attached to Ojo Cantonment Barracks, led by an unidentified soldier, were confronted for driving against traffic. The confrontation escalated, leading to the fatal stabbing of Ganiyu.

The Nigerian Army stressed its commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding its Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement.

“The army has consistently cautioned its personnel against any conduct that could damage its reputation or strain relations with other security agencies and the public,” the statement read.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the Nigeria Police Force, assuring that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice is served.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to fostering collaboration with other security agencies in order to secure lives and property, in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement concluded.
