The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the tragic death of a police officer, Saka Ganiyu, who was reportedly stabbed by a soldier in Lagos on October 9, 2024. The altercation allegedly occurred after a disagreement over a traffic rule violation.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, the Army expressed deep regret over the incident, which involved a soldier attached to the Ojo Cantonment Barracks.
The soldier, whose identity remains undisclosed, was accused of driving against traffic, leading to a confrontation with the late police officer. According to reports, the disagreement escalated, resulting in the fatal stabbing of Ganiyu.
The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the soldier involved in the incident has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and possible disciplinary action.
“The Nigerian Army considers this incident highly regrettable,” the statement said, reiterating the Army’s commitment to upholding its Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement.
The division emphasized that it regularly cautions its personnel against engaging in activities that could damage the Army’s reputation or strain relations with other security agencies and the public.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased officer and to the Nigeria Police Force, assuring all parties that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure that justice is served.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to fostering collaboration with other security agencies in order to secure lives and property, in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement added.
The division reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining professional standards and ensuring public trust throughout and after the investigation, with the aim of preventing future incidents that could harm inter-agency relations.
