THE Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has criticized the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), calling it “unfortunate and insensitive.”
He urged the Federal Government to reverse the increase.
In a detailed post titled “Reversing the Sudden Fuel Price Increase” on his official X account, Obi highlighted the severe economic hardship Nigerians are enduring, which he attributed largely to the government’s poor policy decisions.
He argued that the national oil company, NNPCL, made a wrong move by raising PMS prices.
“As Nigerians struggle under harsh economic conditions, mainly caused by the Federal Government’s wrong policy choices, NNPCL has once again raised the price of fuel (PMS) without explanation,” Obi stated.
“This is both unfortunate and insensitive, given its negative impact on our economic survival and well-being.”
He questioned the role of regulatory agencies in overseeing NNPCL and pointed out the confusion in their responsibilities.
Peter Obi emphasized that the President, who also serves as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, must take responsibility by providing clarity, considering alternatives, and reversing the price hike. He also criticized the President for implementing such a measure while on a working vacation.
Obi’s comments follow NNPCL’s recent fuel price adjustments, with prices rising to N998 per litre in Lagos and N1,030 per litre in Abuja.
Some stations in Lagos have reportedly charged up to N1,050 per litre.
