Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Nigerian leaders to make effective use of the country’s abundant resources to drive development.
He made this appeal on Sunday during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Obasanjo highlighted Nigeria’s natural wealth, urging leaders to appreciate and utilise these resources for national progress.
“As God created other nations and endowed them with resources, He similarly blessed Nigeria with numerous resources for growth,” Obasanjo said.
He pointed to Nigeria’s fertile soil, rivers, and crude oil as examples of the nation’s potential.
Obasanjo also urged the clergy and citizens to pray for the nation’s healing, acknowledging that the current challenges were not God’s doing.
“We’ve squandered God’s gifts, but if we humble ourselves and seek Him, He will heal our land,” he added.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr Nyesom Wike, commended the Methodist Church Nigeria for its contributions to social justice, education, and humanitarian efforts.
In his goodwill message, Tinubu acknowledged the church’s enduring spirit of faith and its positive impact on Nigeria over the past 183 years.
“I celebrate the 40th anniversary of Abuja Archdiocese, a testament to the church’s dedication to faith, community, and service,” Tinubu’s message read.
Methodist Prelate Dr Oliver Aba, in his message titled “Our Appreciation and Gratitude to God,” urged Nigerians to remain calm and hopeful despite challenges. He reminded the congregation of the importance of gratitude, using the biblical story of the 10 lepers healed by Jesus as an example.
The event also saw notable figures, including Obasanjo, Yakubu Gowon, Goodluck Jonathan, and others, receiving the Knights of John Wesley award for their contributions to the nation.
